Brazil: Procon-BA Warns Consumers About the Risks of Sports Betting

Brazil – May 21, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com Procon-BA, the consumer protection agency of Bahia, has issued an important alert regarding precautions users should take when engaging in online sports betting. According to the agency, verifying whether the platform is authorized by the Ministry of Finance is the first essential step to avoid fraud, financial losses, and the misuse of personal data.

⚠️ Bet only on authorized platforms

The Secretariat for Prizes and Betting (SPA), linked to the Ministry of Finance, has released an updated list of 79 companies authorized to operate legally in Brazil. Procon-BA recommends that consumers always check this list before placing any bets. The list can be accessed directly on the Ministry’s official website.

🛑 Risks of unregulated platforms

According to Superintendent Tiago Venâncio, betting on unauthorized websites may result in:

  • Loss of money
  • Exposure to scams
  • Misuse of personal data
  • Lack of legal protection for conflict resolution

“These companies do not comply with consumer protection standards and represent a high risk,” warned Venâncio.

✅ The Betting Law ensures consumer safety

With the enactment of Law No. 14,790/2023, also known as the “Betting Law”, Brazil has officially regulated fixed-odds sports betting, requiring operators to meet technical, financial, and security requirements, as well as promoting responsible gambling and anti-money laundering measures.

Authorized companies must operate exclusively with a “.bet.br” domain. Failure to comply with the law can lead to severe penalties, including license revocation.

🛡️ Procon-BA reaffirms its commitment to consumer protection

Procon-BA continues to carry out educational campaigns and enforcement actions to ensure a safe and transparent online betting environment, emphasizing the importance of using regulated platforms.
