Jontay Porter, just 24 years old, had been playing center for the Toronto Raptors. However, 10 days ago, NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, announced that the athlete was being investigated and was at risk of being permanently banned from the sport.
Athlete was permanently banned from competition
According to Silver, “I have a huge range of disciplinary measures at my disposal. But what he is accused of doing in the NBA is a cardinal sin, and the maximum and extreme option I have is to banish him from the sport.”
Jontay Porter’s suspicious activities occurred between matches between January 26th and March 20th. The athlete allegedly made a lot of money to a partner who used his account to place 13 bets, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. In addition, Jontay Porter would also have provided information about injuries to bettors.
Silver emphasized the seriousness of direct player involvement in gambling: “That’s the level of authority I have here. Because there is nothing more serious, in my opinion, in this league when it comes to gambling: betting on our games. And this is direct player involvement. Therefore, the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very serious.”
According to information, another account connected to Porter invested US$80 thousand in a match and received US$1.1 million with the “prediction” of a poor performance by the athlete involved in the operation. And this Wednesday, April 17th, athlete Jontay Porter was permanently banned from the sport by the NBA.
