Zona de Azar Brasil – Loterj Already Has 13 Accredited Sports Betting Houses

Brazil.- May 7, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com In Rio de Janeiro, thirteen sports betting companies are operating in accordance with the regulations established by the state government, owner of Loterj. These regulations differ from the policies of the federal government’s Prizes and Betting Secretariat on certain points.

For example, the fee for obtaining an operating license at the state level is set at R$5 million, in contrast to the R$30 million required at the federal level.

Loterj Notice Remains Open Until the 14th

The period to register for the Loterj accreditation process remains open and ends on the 14th. At the moment, the current situation is:

4 companies are already fully operational
1 company is awaiting concession payment
8 companies have their documentation under evaluation
More than 20 companies are in the process of qualifying

Recently, in March, the Finance Department asked Loterj to make changes to its notice. The central debate was whether the authority could accredit companies from other states or countries.

The established rule was that bets must be placed within the state of Rio de Janeiro. The Treasury Department argued that states must operate exclusively within their borders.

In response to questions from the Finance Department, Hazenclever Cançado, president of Loterj, emphasized that the uncertainties are based on old legislation from the 1940s, which was aimed at physical tickets.

He stated that: “With regard to the notice of this authority, there is no infringement or exceeding of the territorial limits of its jurisdiction. Therefore, we adopt principles of territoriality that are flexible and adapt to the digital context.”

Governor of Rio Comes Out in Defense of Loterj

In the latest edition of the Official Gazette, on Friday (03), Governor Cláudio Castro, of Rio de Janeiro, granted permission to file a Direct Action of Unconstitutionality. This action aims to challenge specific parts of the Sports Betting Law.

The question will be in relation to the restriction that prevents economic or legal entities from holding more than one concession or operating in more than one state. Furthermore, Castro aims to annul the ban on advertising for lotteries that operate across state borders.
