Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: John Textor Accused of Match Fixing in Football

Brazil.- April 5, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com [1] John Textor was reported by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) this Wednesday, 3, for failing to provide evidence regarding accusations of match-fixing in Brazilian football. The owner of SAF do Botafogo will be judged by the First Disciplinary Commission on the 15th of this month.

In recent weeks, the American has made a series of accusations about possible cases of corruption in Brazilian football. Textor revealed that he had recordings of referees complaining about not receiving promised bribes and also said that Palmeiras benefited in the last two editions of the Brazilian Championship, both won by Verdão.

This week, the top hat gave two specific examples and claimed that Palmeiras’ defeats to São Paulo (5-0) and Fortaleza (4-0) in the 2023 Brasileirãos, respectively, were manipulated. Palmeiras and São Paulo officials repudiated Textor’s statements and promised to take legal action against the American.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the STJD requested the opening of an investigation to probe the accusations. Textor spoke out but did not provide evidence. The agency set a new deadline for him to reveal the evidence; however, the deadline was not met again, prompting the indictment against the director.

Textor was charged under two articles of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice. Article 220-A (section I) refers to “not collaborating with sports justice bodies and other sports authorities in the investigation of irregularities or disciplinary infractions.” Article 223 deals with “failure to comply or delay in complying with a decision, resolution, sports disciplinary action, or determination of the Sports Tribunal.” If found guilty, Textor could be suspended and fined up to R$ 100,000 for each of the articles.
