Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: CBF Responds to Ronaldo and Defends Transparency in the Electoral Process

Brazil – February 27, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com After Ronaldo Nazário sent a letter to the CBF, FIFA, CONMEBOL, and the presidents of the Série A and B clubs of the Brasileirão, questioning the electoral process of the entity and suggesting changes to ensure greater transparency and legal security, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued a statement asserting that its current election model follows democratic and transparent standards.

Among the changes proposed by the former player is setting the election date at least one month in advance to ensure better organization and greater participation from interested parties. He also suggested that FIFA and CONMEBOL oversee the electoral process, reinforcing the fairness of the competition for control of Brazilian football.

Recently, the Supreme Federal Court ratified an agreement between the CBF, five officials, and the Minas Gerais Football Federation, confirming the validity of Ednaldo Rodrigues’ election, which took place in 2022. As a result, he remains president of the entity until the end of his term in March 2026.

As a pre-candidate for the presidency, Ronaldo criticized the current electoral rules, arguing that the requirements make it difficult for new candidates to enter the race. Meanwhile, Ednaldo Rodrigues continues to rally support among state federations to secure re-election. According to the CBF statute, to run for president, a candidate must have the formal backing of at least four state federations and four clubs.

In Ronaldo’s view, the current statutory structure favors the incumbent president, making the process less competitive and reducing the chances of a fair election. He argues that the existing model limits the emergence of alternative candidacies, compromising the fairness of the election.

In response, the CBF emphasized that the election is managed by an Electoral Commission, whose role is to ensure compliance with all statutory regulations and guarantee the integrity of the process. The organization also stated that candidates can appeal to this commission to address any concerns related to the election.

Regarding Ronaldo’s request for FIFA and CONMEBOL to oversee the elections, the Brazilian entity explained that its statute underwent a FIFA review and was later approved in an assembly with the participation of all 27 state federations. However, the confederation did not comment on the request to set the election date in advance, which is one of the former player’s main demands.
