Brazil.- August 14, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Parliamentary Commission of Investigation on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting (CPIMJAE) will listen this Wednesday (14), starting at 2:30 p.m., to Rodrigo Alves, president of the Brazilian Sports Betting Association (Abaesp). He will explain the role of sports betting companies in combating and preventing the manipulation of sports results.

The request (REQ 67/2024 – CPIMJAE) from Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) intends that the entity’s hearing will be able to clarify the internal policies and guidelines that govern the operations of sports betting companies in the country.

“The presence of the Brazilian Sports Betting Association, as a representative of sports betting companies, is essential for the understanding of this Parliamentary Investigation Commission on the actions of these companies in the fight and prevention of the manipulation of sports results” , Portinho states in the document.

According to the parliamentarian, the testimony will help understand the mechanisms of cooperation between companies and sports and judicial authorities. And also how information is shared to identify suspicious betting patterns. This, according to the Rio senator, will allow for debate on the prospects of the sports betting market in Brazil and the regulatory challenges.

According to the app, the sports betting market generates billions of dollars in value in Brazil. In his justification, Portinho cites reports from the Central Bank according to which Brazilians spent around R$54 billion on online games and betting in 2023; and a report from a private bank published at the beginning of 2024, which estimates the movement of this market between R$ 100 and 120 billion per year.

Federal District

Also on Wednesday, CPIMJAE will hear from the president of the Santa María Sports Society, in Brasilia, Dayana Nunes. She will clarify suspicions of manipulation of sports results by some players.

Two athletes are being investigated by the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) for acting “deliberately” to manipulate the results of some matches held in 2024 by the club during the Candangão, the DF’s soccer championship.

For the deliberative part of the meeting, it is planned to vote on five invitation requests for representatives of the Superior Court of Sports Justice of Football (STJD), the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR).
