Mexico.- August 2, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Mexico’s betting and gaming industry is going through a social process similar to other emerging markets in the region, such as Argentina, Brazil and Chile, in in relation to legislative debates on the possibility of restricting advertising.
Now, in Mexico, several changes have been proposed to the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law in order to prohibit advertising campaigns in the sector, especially to prevent children from accessing this information.
Thus, the Green Ecologist Party presented the project prohibiting “promoting, suggesting, manipulating or encouraging participation in recreational activities” to minors, with item IX of article 246 of the Law. According to the article, “advertising houses betting in mass media represents a significant challenge for the protection of children and adolescents”, according to the local press.
He further added that “the participation of children in betting-related activities represents a serious problem with negative consequences on several aspects of their development and well-being. From an ethical point of view, early introduction to betting practices goes against the protection of innocence and the formation of solid values.”
In the first instance, the project will be dealt with by the Comisión de Radio, Televisión y Cinematografía of the Senate of Mexico, going to the plenary, if approved. The expectation is that there will be news regarding the regulatory process in the coming weeks.
