Brazil.- January 14, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com  Loterj informed the Supreme Federal Court last Friday (10th) that it is impossible to comply with the requirements for the operation of sports betting companies with state-level authorization. The compliance period was set at five days.

The decision by Justice André Mendonça was published on January 2.

The Supreme Court’s ruling was clear in determining that betting companies with state-level authorization could only operate within their respective states.

According to Loterj, the state entity that oversees lotteries in Rio de Janeiro, including sports betting companies, there is no technology capable of enforcing this restriction.

Loterj stated that the betting companies claimed they do not have the systems or equipment required to capture and monitor real-time geolocation data.

They also argued that another obstacle is that client devices—smartphones or connected devices—lack the necessary technical requirements to provide precise location data transmission.

The companies further justified that implementing a system to comply with the court order would require significant investments beyond their financial capacity.

In its petition, Loterj requested a relaxation of the STF’s ruling and an extension of the deadline to comply with any revised requirements.
