Zona de Azar Spain – Spain’s Online Sector Continues to Grow in First Quarter
Spain.- June 11th 2019 www.zonadeazar.com According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling’s (DGOJ) report for the first quarter of the year on the development of the online gambling market GGR for the quarter stood at €193.25m an increase of 2.14 per cent over the previous quarter and an increase over the same quarter in 2018 of 20.10 per cent.
Of the GGR € 100.83 m (52.18 per cent) was generated by sports betting. € 67.1m was generated via online casinos (34.72 per cent) 21.17 m via Poker (10.96 per cent). € 3.21 m via Bingo (1.66 per cent) while GGR for competitions stood at €0.94 (0.49 per cent).
The sports betting segment experienced a growth rate of 0.63 per cent compared to the previous quarter and 26.22 per cent year on year.
Meanwhile bingo experienced a decrease of 8.40 per cent compared to the previous quarter and -8.60 per cent with respect to the same quarter in 2018.
The online casino sector continued to grow increasing by 3.7 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2018 and reported an annual variation of 20.17 per cent. According to the DGOJ, the growth in the online casino sector is mainly due to online slots, which were first permitted in 2015, which has in turn led to an increasingly higher market share.
Poker filed an increase of 2.70 per cent over the previous quarter and a decrease of -1.4 per cent year on year. The increase is mainly due to tournament poker, which recorded a growth in the quarter of 7.88 per cent. Marketing spend in the quarter stood at €92.25 an annual growth of 21.38 per cent. Broken down into segments companies spent €10.18 m on affiliate marketing; € 4.88m on sponsorship; €29.34.on promotions; and €47.85m on advertising. The monthly average number active users stood at 909,513 a growth of 13.11 per cent with respect to the same quarter of the previous year.
Earlier this month the DGOJ released its yearly report on the development of the gambling market. In 2018 GGR for online gaming increased by 25.48 per cent – more than €699m compared to 2017. Compared to the previous year, all segments grew online, except for competitions, which decreased significantly.
