Zona de Azar USA – “AGA” Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker

USA.- August 14, 2020 www.zonadeazar.com The American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker features monthly and year-to-date gross gaming revenue (GRR) at a state and national level, broken down by individual gaming verticals, including brick-and-mortar slot and table games, retail and online sports betting, and iGaming.

June Commercial Gaming Revenue

In June, the most recent month with complete national data, national commercial gaming revenue saw a steep year-over-year decline due to COVID-19. While nearly 300 commercial casinos reopened throughout June, nearly 100 remained closed by month’s end. Those that did reopen operated with limited capacity, game availability, and amenities.

While June 2020 marked a significant drop in year-over-year commercial GGR, it also saw a sharp rise in gaming revenue over the previous two months, generating nearly four times the commercial gaming revenue of April and May combined.

Driven largely by the extent of casino reopenings, states experienced varying declines in June commercial GGR. While states like Iowa, Mississippi, and Delaware reached levels close to 2019, commercial gaming in other states reopened on a smaller scale or remained closed altogether.

Commercial gaming revenue and nationwide sports betting handle both saw strong growth prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, with GGR up more than 10 percent year-over-year in January and February 2020 and Q1 2020 sports betting handle up 45.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

While the return of the PGA Tour, NASCAR, European soccer, and other sports helped buoy sportsbook revenue in June, the extended hiatus of the major U.S. sports leagues continued to subdue betting activity in June.
