Zona de Azar Argentina – Attempt to Issue Opinion on Gambling Addiction and Online Betting on Wednesday

Argentina.- November 12, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com An official plenary session of five commissions has been called, where they will attempt to finalize the text to bring it to the floor. It is scheduled for this Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

With the aim of closing the year with at least an opinion, if not the half-approval some had hoped for, the commissions on Addiction Prevention and Narcotics Control; Social Action and Public Health; Communications and Informatics; Criminal Legislation; and Families, Childhood, and Youth have been summoned for this Wednesday.

The meeting will take place at 9:30 a.m. on the second floor of Annex C, with the early hour chosen by the head of the Addiction Prevention commission, Mónica Frade, considering the possibility of a session expected to be called by the government to address the privatization of Aerolíneas Argentinas and clean records.

Although it doesn’t seem likely that session will happen this week, the call was still formalized for this time to advance with an opinion on the amendment to Law 26,934, regarding comprehensive and interdisciplinary prevention and treatment of gambling addiction in children and adolescents.

The agenda includes the comprehensive plan for addressing problematic consumption, along with a ban on online betting advertising and restrictions on advertising during professional soccer broadcasts.

This meeting was initially expected to take place last Thursday, but according to the head of the main committee in the plenary, Addiction Prevention, it was postponed because Criminal Legislation members were in the United States, and the head of the Families commission did not want to issue an opinion.

It is worth noting that the latter commission held an individual meeting on the issue and was included in the plenary for the last meeting, which took place on August 13.

All expectations are now focused on whether they will be able to advance with the opinion, a goal they hope to achieve by November 20, the deadline for issuing opinions.
