Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Bill Proposes Increase in Betting Revenue Allocated to Health
Brazil – October 18, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Congressman Ismael Alexandrino (PSD-GO) has introduced a legislative proposal aimed at changing the distribution of resources from the taxation of online betting. The bill suggests a significant increase in the share allocated to the Ministry of Health, from 1% to 10% of total revenue.
The initiative proposes a reduction in the funds directed to the tourism sector, decreasing from 28% to 19%. The main goal of this change is to strengthen mental health programs and gambling addiction prevention.
Alexandrino argues that the current 1% is insufficient to address the growing challenge of health issues related to sports betting.
The congressman emphasizes the need for more substantial investment to effectively protect public health.
Impact of betting on public health
The bill aims to direct more resources to psychosocial care initiatives, recognizing the importance of addressing the potential consequences of increased online betting in Brazil.
This proposal reflects a growing concern about the impact of sports betting on public health. The proposed redistribution seeks to balance the economic interests of the betting sector with the responsibility to care for citizens’ mental health.
Finance Ministry has announced the list of authorized betting sites until December
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Finance updated the list of authorized betting companies in Brazil until December earlier this month. The national list now includes 96 companies and 210 betting sites. Additionally, the state list includes 18 companies.
Companies needed to request authorization from the Department of Prizes and Betting by September 17 to be on the list. However, some companies were left out of the initial list published on October 1, despite meeting the deadline. While the initial list included 89 companies and 193 betting sites.
Therefore, the Federal Government states that the states themselves are responsible for their authorization decisions. However, these decisions must comply with federal law. The regulated market will take effect on January 1, with only duly accredited betting houses allowed to operate and advertise in the country.
