Brazil.- June 25, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com  The president of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Sports Betting Fraud, senator Jorge Kajuru, announced that Lucas Paquetá’s advisors contacted his office.

These communications aimed to disregard the invitation made to the player to give testimony at the CPI. The senator emphasized his refusal to negotiate this issue.

Recently, the CPI decided to invite the West Ham athlete, currently under investigation by the English Football Federation (FA) for alleged involvement in betting on the Premier League, to appear before the commission. Given that the procedure is an invitation and not a subpoena, Paquetá has the freedom not to respond to the call.

Lucas Paquetá, a football player, was accused by the English Federation of being involved in an alleged scheme to manipulate sporting results. According to the allegations, Paquetá had intentionally received yellow cards during selected matches to influence sports betting, thus affecting the integrity of football.

Senator Eduardo Girão, vice-president of the commission, highlighted in his request that there were four occasions, from November 2022 to August 2023, in which Paquetá would have acted in such a way. The investigation into the player began in August of the previous year, but until then, no charges had been formalized.

In light of these events, Senator Jorge Kajuru proposed a request (REQ 71/2024) asking Paquetá to give testimony before the commission. However, the player’s immediate presence is questionable due to his commitment to the Copa América in the USA.

The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI), which deals with the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting, aims to investigate illicit acts that compromise justice and transparency in sport. The commission considers Paquetá’s participation essential to clarify the serious accusations leveled against him.

To conclude, Senator Eduardo Girão emphasized the need to listen to all parties so that the facts are properly clarified. He highlighted: “It is essential to have honest football, where results are determined by performance on the field, and not by external influences.”
