Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Elections Moved Over BRL 187 Million in Bets

Brazil – October 9, 2024 – www.zonadeazar.com According to columnist Cláudio Humberto from Rádio Bandeirantes, the 2024 municipal elections generated around BRL 187 million in bets. The journalist commented on the impact of betting on the municipal elections, noting that bettors consider Ricardo Nunes the clear favorite to remain in charge of Brazil’s largest capital.

In his statements, Humberto mentioned a foreign betting platform that saw about BRL 187 million in bets placed on the municipal elections. Of that amount, approximately BRL 185 million was bet on the first round of the mayoral race in São Paulo.

“Throughout the entire time, Ricardo Nunes was always the favorite on this betting platform. For the second round, Nunes surged: 84.5% of the bettors on this platform are backing the MDB candidate’s victory,” the journalist remarked.

TSE Banned Bets Involving Election Outcomes

On September 17, the Plenary of the TSE (Supreme Electoral Court) unanimously ruled that online betting services on websites and mobile apps are considered an electoral offense. This decision directly affects betting platforms offering markets related to elections, which are now considered illegal.

According to the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, at least six betting platforms had already offered options on who would be the next mayor in cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador, among others. There is still no specific regulation preventing such bets related to the electoral landscape in Brazil.

On this occasion, the TSE stated that “these bets could become a matter of judgment in the court and may be discussed in a future case.” The decision was made due to the court’s concern about the growing impact of these bets on upcoming presidential elections, which could further amplify the effects of this practice. Following the TSE’s ruling, the betting platforms offering these markets withdrew them from their platforms.

“For greater electoral legal effectiveness, especially in this ongoing process, ensuring a secure, transparent election, respecting voters’ freedom to vote,” commented Cármen Lúcia.
