Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Senators Criticize Gambling Project, Demand more Committee Debate
Brasília.- May 16, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The discussion in Plenary this Tuesday (14) about a request — which was not scheduled — to submit to three more Senate committees the bill that authorizes the operation of casinos, bingos and Jogo do Bicho (PL 2.234 /2022) was marked by criticism of the expansion of the legalization of gambling in the country.
According to a publication by Agência Senado, Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), author of the request, requests that the project, which could be voted on this Wednesday (15) in the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) on a final basis , also be analyzed by the Economic Affairs (CAE), Social Affairs (CAS) and Public Security (CSP) commissions .
When defending her request, Senator Eliziane Gama expressed concern about what she called the “gambling statute” and the worsening of gaming addiction. She mentioned statistics from the United States that indicate negative impacts on public safety, mental health and social security in regions that authorize casinos.
“The justification that we are going to collect money is not sustainable. Up front, the result is health and safety. In other words: it means entering from one side and leaving, in large numbers, from the other”, he warned.
Senator Zenaide Maia (PSD-RN) expressed her vote against the legalization of gambling, highlighting her opposition to any type of addiction. She also stated that the tax revenue generated by gaming houses will not compensate for the losses suffered by families.
“If you want to destroy a young person’s life, give him an addiction,” declared the senator.
Also according to Agência Senado, senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) defended the expansion of the debate on the legalization of casinos to other committees, considering the timing inappropriate due to the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul. Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF ) asked for a deeper debate so that senators elected in 2022 can express their positions. Leila Barros (PDT-DF) highlighted the seriousness of the issue, which compromises the mental health of the population. Senator Cleitinho (Republicanos-MG) asked the CCJ for awareness and declared a no vote . Carlos Viana (Podemos-MG) stated that the casinos will generate “cursed money” that will not solve public accounts.
