Zona de Azar Brasil – IBJR: Brazil Pioneering in Facial Recognition in the Betting Sector

Brazil.- October 23, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The IBJR (Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming) announced that facial recognition for online betting has entered the testing phase on associated platforms. The IBJR is responsible for about 75% of the national betting market and is a highly relevant entity in the industry.

As we had previously reported, facial recognition at betting sites will become mandatory starting in January 2025. Brazil will be a pioneer in using technology to prevent underage betting and potential fraud.

The technology to be used is similar to that already employed by banking institutions to verify the authenticity of users. Therefore, any inconsistency in the information with facial recognition will result in access to the betting platforms being blocked.

It is known that the information stored in the financial market and government-linked systems will be used in conjunction with biometric authentication. The purpose of this measure is to identify possible prohibited and harmful behaviors related to responsible gaming.

Taking advantage of the announcement, IBJR also stated that websites will have artificial intelligence tools to block access attempts made by minors. According to Law 14.790/2024, betting by individuals under 18 years of age is prohibited.
