Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: AGU Requests Supreme Court to Prohibit Loterj
Brazil – October 15, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Office of the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) requested the Supreme Federal Court (STF) last Friday (13th) to prohibit Loterj from authorizing online betting companies nationwide, also requesting the immediate suspension of operations outside of Rio de Janeiro.
The lawsuit claims that Loterj does not limit betting to the state and applies insufficient regulations to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing. Although bettors are required to provide a declaration, there is no effective geolocation system to restrict operations to Rio.
The AGU argues that this practice disrupts the balance between states and fair competition. States such as Paraná and Maranhão require geolocation to regulate local betting.
The federal government is in the final stages of regulating betting and has already introduced measures to combat irregular operations. Anatel has been called upon to block unauthorized companies on digital platforms.
According to the AGU, Loterj’s nationwide operations encourage a “fiscal war,” forcing states to loosen regulations and compromising the security of operations.
