Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Arthur Lira Refuses to Reveal Information to the Senate CPI

Brazil.- May 3, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com  Regarding the issue of sports betting, a controversy arose involving Arthur Lira, president of the Chamber of Deputies.

He refused to reveal confidential information acquired by the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Sports Betting to the Senate CPI investigating Results Manipulation and Sports Betting.

The decision not to share the data was informed to Senator Jorge Kajuru, president of the Senate CPI.

Arthur Lira Affirms that the House is not Subject to the Senate

Arthur Lira argued that the Chamber of Deputies is not subordinate to the Federal Senate and that the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) does not have the authority to request documents directly from its president. He emphasized that both legislative chambers are on equal terms in the country’s constitutional structure, without any relationship of subordination.

Lira also highlighted that the CPI that led the Chamber last year had already committed to maintaining the confidentiality of the documents, which have individual confidentiality reasons.

Therefore, according to the Speaker of the House, providing such documents could violate the secrecy imposed and would perhaps not serve the purpose of the IPC.

Representatives of the CBF are Heard at the CPI of the Senate

The directors of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) expressed that they are open to considering the accusations presented by John Textor, owner of Botafogo. Textor gave a statement to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on April 22.

On the other hand, last Monday (29), the Head of Integrity of the CBF, Eduardo Gussem, and the Director of Competitions, Júlio Avellar, spoke.

Gussem stated: “Until now, assumptions and conjectures that are more speculative than factual have predominated. The CBF is alert. If we are notified of any serious incident, we will take immediate measures, referring the matter to the judicial authorities, the Federal Police and the CPI itself.”
