Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Betting Platforms Face Problems in Rio and in the Country
Brazil.- July 26, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com In recent days, most sports betting and online gaming platforms have faced some type of connection problem in Rio de Janeiro and even in the rest of the country due to the determination by TRF1 for the National Telecommunications Agency – Anatel to request that telephone and internet operators block betting platforms that operate in Rio de Janeiro without a license from the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery – LOTERJ.
On the day of Anatel’s notification to telephone and internet providers, BNLData warned about the technical difficulties operators had in blocking websites (domains/sites/DNS, IPs, URLs and ASNs) only in Rio de Janeiro due to the high degree of complexity and the risk of side effects of this measure affecting the entire country. In fact, some of them officially expressed their views on the process, such as AT&T Global Network Services Brazil and Claro.
Some cases, such as the problems faced by users of the Oi operator in Paraná and the Central West, may have been due to technical problems, but users of betting platforms in several states of the country faced connection problems in the last 48 hours.
Specifically in Rio de Janeiro, the operator VIVO blocked access to mobile data from cell phones and fiber optic connections in the state, but maintained Wi-Fi service after 24 hours of notification. Starting this week, the operations of Claro, TIM and Oi began blocking access to online betting and gaming platforms from the URL addresses reported in the lawsuit by LOTERJ.
To block the domain name (example: siteilegal.com.br), the provider must register the blocked domain in its “Recursive DNS Server”, which is the DNS (Domain Name System) server used by the Internet provider’s customers to browse.
It turns out that the platforms anticipated and informed customers registered in Rio de Janeiro of an alternative address and all residents in the state were able to continue betting on their favorite platforms.
In fact, the lockdown in the state of Rio de Janeiro only affected the acquisition of new customers.
Participation of mobile phone operators

In May, Vivo held a 38.6% share of the national market, followed by Claro with 33.9%, TIM with 23.7% and Oi with 16.5%. In Rio de Janeiro, Claro leads with 37.4% (8,135,067 devices), followed by Vivo with 34.7% (7,552,755) and TIM with 25.6% (5,575,118). Source
