Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: CPI Listens to President of Institute Related to Betting 

Brasil.- November 12, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Parliamentary Inquiry Commission on Game and Sports Betting Manipulation scheduled hearings on Tuesday (12) for André Pereira Cardoso Gelfi, president of the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR), and Giovanni Rocco Neto, National Secretary for Sports Betting and Economic Development in Sports. The testimonies are set to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The author of both hearing requests is the CPI’s rapporteur, Senator Romário (PL-RJ). He argues that it is essential for the CPI to understand the IBJR’s stance on sports betting regulation and best practices for “responsible gaming.”

In his request, Romário notes that the entity includes the main betting houses operating in Brazil among its members. Additionally, Romário argues that the IBJR has played a prominent role in discussions on sports betting regulation in recent years, advocating, according to him, for best practices in areas such as transparency and regulation, responsible gaming, fraud prevention, and anti-corruption measures.

According to Romário, hearing Giovanni Rocco Neto is also relevant because the newly created National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development in Sports, linked to the Ministry of Sports, is responsible for monitoring and overseeing issues related to sports betting, ensuring that this activity does not negatively impact the integrity of games or the healthy development of sports.

“This CPI intends to hear from the secretary about the action plans being developed, as well as learn about the oversight structure being set up to perform this critical role in combating sports betting manipulation,” reads the request.

Player Summoning

Before the hearings, on Tuesday, the parliamentarians will vote on requests such as 112/2024, which summons Luiz Henrique André Rosa da Silva, forward for Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas. The request comes from CPI president, Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO).

Kajuru is also behind request 154/2024, inviting José Ferreira Neto, former football player, presenter, and sports commentator for Grupo Bandeirantes de Televisão, as a witness.

Another request to be voted on (152/2024) comes from Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), vice-president of the commission, for the CPI to take the testimony of football player Bruno Henrique Pinto.
