Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Manipulation in Brazilian Football Drops 67% in 2024

Brazil.- July 1, 2024  www.zonadeazar.com  Brazilian football in 2023 was marked by a major scandal, Operation Maximum Penalty, which revealed a network of results manipulation that affected all spheres of the sport and resulted in the punishment of multiple players. In parallel, Operation Jogo Limpo, an initiative of the Federal Police in conjunction with the CBF, has carried out exemplary work in combating corruption in football.

Recently, Operação Jogo Limpo launched an investigation into the Patrocinense club after a Sportradar report suggested that bettors could be acting with privileged information about the games. There are suspicions that a player agency, which entered into a partnership with Patrocinense to hire its athletes, is involved in the scheme.

Although there are still suspected cases, there was a significant reduction of 67% in suspected manipulation in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, falling from 70 to 23 cases. In competitions under the aegis of the CBF, the drop was even more pronounced, with a decrease of 92.8%, from 14 to just one suspected case.

The CBF and the Federal Police are engaged in the fight against match-fixing, with six CBF departments providing essential data to the authorities:

Integrity Unit;
Registration, Transfer and Licensing Directorate;
Competitions Directorate;
Legal Directorate;
Governance and Compliance Department;
Arbitration Commission.

Although they do not disclose details of the strategies adopted, the CBF and PF have adopted several measures and protocols to prevent illicit activities and guarantee the integrity of the games. These actions are fundamental to eradicating manipulation in national football.

As disclosed by the CBF, a thorough scan is being carried out to detect possible fraud involving players, managers, technical committees, referees and other intermediaries.
