Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Ministry of Finance Seeks to Ban Betting on Cards and Other Football Events
Brazil. – December 10, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has taken a stance against betting on game events beyond the final result, such as yellow or red cards. The information was disclosed by Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), president of the CPI on Manipulation in Sports and Betting, after a meeting with the minister.
According to Kajuru, Haddad aligned himself with him and CPI rapporteur Senator Romário (PL-RJ), arguing that betting should be restricted to match results and not extend to events like cards or corner kicks.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also supports this position, and it is expected that a decree will soon be issued to prohibit this type of betting.
The government adopted this stance following a case involving Flamengo player Bruno Henrique, who was investigated by the Federal Police in 2023. He allegedly incurred a yellow card to manipulate bets, sparking a strong reaction from authorities.
Despite expressions of support, the Ministry of Finance has yet to officially announce the details of how this measure will be implemented.
