Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Senator Highlights Strict Supervision of the Betting Sector
Brazil.- September 17, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Federal Senate received a request for the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on illegal betting, submitted by Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), with the support of 31 signatures.
The request came after Operation Integration, launched by the Civil Police of Pernambuco. This CPI aims to investigate illegal practices related to betting and suspicious financial transactions.
According to the text supporting the request:
“The growing popularity of online virtual betting games in Brazil has attracted the attention of authorities, especially regarding the possibility of large-scale money laundering.”
For the senator, the CPI is necessary to identify failures in monitoring the sector.
Soraya Thronicke asserts that the creation of the CPI is essential to identify gaps in the regulation and oversight of betting activities. The senator points out that Congress has already approved sports betting and online gaming.
Furthermore, she highlights that the Executive Branch is still drafting ordinances to regulate these activities.
Regarding regulation, Soraya states that she voted in favor of betting in Brazil and does not regret her stance. She emphasizes the importance of strict supervision of the sector.
“There is no point in turning a blind eye to the reality of online gaming in Brazil. But strict supervision is needed. There should be no sponsorships, no advertising.”
Another point raised by the senator is the role of digital influencers in promoting these bets. She notes the lack of control over the actions of these public figures, who promote platforms on social media without proper oversight.
The senator believes that the CPI will allow for a more detailed analysis of the financial operations related to online betting games, which could lead to the implementation of more effective control mechanisms. According to Soraya, the commission will be able to ensure consumer protection and market integrity.
Relation to the CPI on Match Fixing
Currently, the Senate already has another commission investigating the sports betting sector, but with a different focus.
The CPI on Sports Betting and Match Fixing, chaired by Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), investigates match-fixing fraud in Brazilian football. The CPI is expected to conclude on October 7 of this year.
