Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Would Betting Be Limited to Match Results Only?
Brazil. – December 10, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The president of the CPI on Betting, Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB – GO), revealed that Finance Minister Fernando Haddad supports restricting bets on secondary events, such as yellow cards in football. Last month, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also endorsed this position.
Kajuru shared Haddad’s stance during a CPI meeting. The minister supports the idea of prohibiting bets on factors not directly related to the match’s final result.
Haddad and Lula Are Aligned on Betting
In a conversation with Senator Romário (PL-RJ), rapporteur of the CPI, Kajuru stated:
“Haddad congratulated us on the stance we both have regarding sports betting, where bets on yellow and red cards, throw-ins, corners, and penalties would be prohibited.”
“In short, only bets on the match result would be allowed. Minister Haddad asked to let it be known that he fully agrees with you and me. President Lula is already in agreement; let’s wait for the decree.”
So far, the Ministry of Finance has not commented on the matter. However, the ministry announced today an ordinance published in the Official Gazette, creating an interministerial Working Group (GT) dedicated to mental health and preventing gambling-related harm.
Bruno Henrique Case and Concerns About Manipulation
The debate over betting on specific events gained traction following the involvement of high-profile players in investigated cases, such as Flamengo’s Bruno Henrique. He was accused of intentionally earning a yellow card in 2023 to benefit betting companies.
These cases reinforce arguments for stricter regulations aimed at reducing manipulation and ensuring greater integrity in sports. Lula had already criticized such practices, emphasizing the need for changes to protect Brazilian football.
