Zona de Azar Brazil – “Brazil’s Election Bets”: The Superior Electoral Court on Alert

Brazil.- September 12, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is on alert due to the growth of “election bets,” a market available on betting platforms where it is possible to bet on mayoral candidates in the upcoming elections, which will take place on October 6 across Brazil. According to the entity, this is a new phenomenon that needs to be monitored by the Electoral Justice.

The discussion around this topic arose due to a lack of regulation, as the new betting law will only come into force at the beginning of 2025, covering only real events in the sports or online arenas, leaving election bets in a “legal void.” Although the TSE prohibits the conduct of surveys related to the electoral process, there are no specific regulations on betting.

Currently, the elections in 11 capitals are available on betting platforms, with São Paulo standing out, where the contests between Pablo Marçal, Guilherme Boulos, and Datena have gained national attention.

The TSE is concerned that these bets could interfere with the voter’s freedom of choice. There are also doubts about whether the amounts bet on candidates could be considered an abuse of power.

On October 6, all cities in Brazil will elect their representatives for the next four years. The positions of councilor and mayor will be voted on in all cities of the country. Source
