Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: Public Consultation on e-Sports in Fixed-Odds Betting
Brazil.- February 18, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport (SNAEDE), linked to the Ministry of Sport, has launched a public consultation to evaluate the inclusion of e-Sports in the regulations established by Portaria MEsp 125/2024.
This consultation will be available from 17 February to 5 March on the ‘Participa + Brasil’ platform of the Presidency of the Republic.
Regulation MEsp 125/2024 regulates sports disciplines and the entities that can take part in fixed-odds betting on real sporting events. Although the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not officially recognise e-Sports as a sporting discipline, its growing popularity has led to the creation of the e-Sports Olympic Games. Current regulations already allow betting on IOC-recognised e-Sports.
The year 2025 will mark a milestone in the history of electronic sports, as the IOC will make them official as a new Olympic discipline. In this context, the first Olympic e-Sports Games will be held in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.
In addition to including electronic sports in the list of disciplines eligible for betting, this initiative seeks to gather opinions and suggestions from civil society, experts and other stakeholders. The aim is to identify which e-Sports disciplines are the most popular in Brazil, which should be recognised by the IOC for the Olympic Games and what other measures could contribute to the development of this industry.
‘With the growth of e-Sports and their economic and social impact, we want to know society’s view on which modalities should be considered and what criteria should be adopted. Based on the responses, the Ministry will be able to evaluate possible adjustments to the regulations to align them with public expectations,’ the text of the public consultation states.
