Zona de Azar Brazil – Sports Commission Will Debate Possible Manipulation of Results in Football
Brazil.- March 18, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Sports Commission (CEsp) will hold a public hearing to discuss suspicions of manipulation of the results of the 2023 Brazilian football championship.
The debate is scheduled for Wednesday (20), immediately after the deliberative part of the commission’s meeting, scheduled for 10:30 am. The hearing request (REQ 1/2021) was submitted by Senators Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).
The presidents of Londrina Esporte Clube, Getúlio Marques Castilho, and Tombense Futebol Clube, Lane Gaviolle, are invited to the debate. A match between Tombense and Londrina, from Serie B, held on May 19 of last year, is among the suspects of having manipulated the result in order to favor bettors who guessed the team with the most yellow cards. Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) spoke on the subject last Tuesday (12).
Also on the guest list are executives from the company Good Game!, Thierry Hassanaly, and from the Sociedade Anônima do Futebol do Botafogo, Thairo Arruda. According to reports in the sports press, Good Game! analyzed some matches of the 2023 Brasileirão Serie A championship and identified possible result manipulation based on refereeing decisions, which, in theory, would have harmed the Botafogo team in the title race. After leading most of the championship, the Rio team finished 5th, behind Flamengo, Atlético, Grêmio, and Palmeiras.
The debate is scheduled to take place in Room 13 of the Senator Alexandre Coelho Wing and will be interactive, with the possibility of popular participation.
How to participate
The event will be interactive: citizens can send questions and comments by calling the Senate People’s Defender (0800 061 2211) or through the e-Citizenship Portal, which senators and debaters can read and respond to live. The Senate offers a participation certificate, which can be used as an extra hour of activity in a university course, for example. The Electronic Citizenship Portal also receives opinions from citizens on bills under consideration in the Senate, as well as suggestions for new laws.
