Zona de Azar Chile – Chile: New Decree Aims to Facilitate the Return of Municipal Casinos

The Government of Chile has published Decree No. 803 in the Official Gazette, with the aim of facilitating the return of municipal casinos without any penalties.
The decree amends Supreme Decree No. 1,722 of 2015, issued by the Ministry of Finance, which establishes the regulations for the processing and granting of operating permits for casinos in the country.
Although the decree is generic, it is already speculated that the direct beneficiary will be the Enjoy group, which has been facing financial difficulties for some time. Enjoy has been operating the municipal casinos in Viña del Mar, Coquimbo, and Pucón since obtaining the operating licenses in 2018, with multimillion-dollar guarantees for each operation.
The decree also allows casino operators to manage the venues for up to three years while a new tender process is carried out. This measure aims to avoid potential economic harm to local and regional communities and mitigate unemployment.
