Zona de Azar Germany – Germany: Sports Committee Takes Position Against Banning Betting Sponsorships
Germany .- May 22, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Sports Committee of the German Bundestag held a crucial vote, deciding to reject the proposal that aimed to ban sponsorships from betting companies in sports.
Experts highlight that such a decision is vital to ensure the financing and advancement of sports in the country.
According to the organization, sponsorships play an essential role for sports in Germany. The absence of this financial support would put the holding of many sporting events at risk.
On the other hand, Inka Müller-Schmäh, executive manager of the Association of Sports Sponsorship Suppliers, emphasized the importance of establishing a clear legal framework.
She argued that the continuity of sports sponsorships must be guaranteed, regardless of the place, time or way in which the sport is practiced or transmitted.
Regulations on the Betting Market in Germany
Germany faces a challenging scenario when it comes to sponsorship and regulation of the gambling market. The Interstate Gaming Treaty establishes severe limitations, including a ban on online and television betting advertising from 9pm to 6am, as well as prohibiting collaborations with sports figures and digital influencers.
These restrictive measures have driven German players to seek services from unauthorized international operators. A study by the University of Leipzig in 2023 indicated that around 50% of online bets in Germany are made through these operators.
The illegal market becomes attractive due to ease of access and fewer restrictions related to advertising and incentives.
Countries such as the Netherlands and France have already banned agreements between betting companies and sports teams. In England, Premier League clubs have chosen to remove gambling logos from their shirts until the end of the 2025-26 season.
In this way, the Bundestag’s recent decision represents a significant step forward in preserving the financial integrity of sport in Germany. It is vital that regulations in the betting sector are balanced so as not to negatively interfere with sporting progress.
