Zona de Azar United Kingdom – GGPoker High Stakes Reform
United Kingdom.- November 13, 2024. www.zonadeazar.com In recent days, there has been an uproar over GGPoker’s new measure aimed at reforming high-stakes cash games.
Before they announced a radical change in their high-stakes lobby, restricting access to NL5k or higher tables exclusively through invitation from one of the hosts, alarms were already being raised in certain forums.
It was a Russian player who first sounded the alarm on the 1st of this month. Known as “proces” on the Gipsyteam platform, he shared information on his Telegram channel about the upcoming high-stakes reform in the GGPoker network.
A few days later, what had been an open secret became official. Regular players in these games received an email from GG informing them of the decision to privatize these games. The email included the following information.
Exclusive Games: “What are exclusive games? Exclusive games offer a home game run by an individual host. GGPoker will provide security on the platform, but the home game will be controlled by the host.”
How to Participate? “Only users who receive an invitation from the host can participate.”
The goal of this measure is to protect recreational players, but it’s a heavy blow for regular players, who will see their usual traffic decline. Will this benefit the ecosystem? Will there still be traffic at regular tables?
These are questions we don’t have answers to yet, but in the near future, we’ll know if the measure has succeeded or failed miserably.
Another question is: Will regular tables continue to exist, or will they disappear? Some players consulted are unsure, though they agree it’s interesting for VIPs to play among themselves, as they might win more often. But… will this make them want to play regular games, or will it create a vicious circle where they only want to play this type of game?
There’s also been some commotion about these measures on ‘X’. Phil Galfond, a highly respected figure in the poker world, sparked a conversation with a tweet seeking opinions on this measure.
One of the first to share his thoughts was Joe Ingram. The American stated, “Completely getting rid of public game battles and making them private just when it seems there’s still a solid group of players wanting to battle publicly at all stakes doesn’t make much sense to me, but it’s a great opportunity for a new poker site.”
Do you agree with Joe that other poker sites might benefit from GGPoker’s decision to privatize high stakes?
In the Spanish community, two players have shared their thoughts on this: Álex Ciutat “NuttedKane” and Daniel Rodríguez “Danonino_7” posted their opinions on ‘X’. While Álex shared his perspective, “Danonino_7” was very outspoken.
As Dani notes, this reminds us of live poker, where you need connections, VIPs willing to play with you, or to be friends with the host to access the best games. Now, this is moving to online poker, where—except for some private clubs (something GGPoker offers with its GGClub app)—games on all platforms have been public until now.
Either way, we’ll be watching closely to see how high stakes play out from now on or if further changes are announced in the future, allowing regulars at these levels to enjoy the traffic they once had.
