China.- January 30th 2024 www.zonadeazar.com In the final quarter of 2023, Macau witnessed a decrease of 3,600 in the number of local employees engaged in the gaming and junket sector, as reported by the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
This decline brought the total workforce in this industry to 67,400 employees.
For the fourth quarter, Macau’s overall unemployment rate stood at 2.3%, with local residents experiencing an unemployment rate of 2.9% and an underemployment rate of 1.4%.
The total number of unemployed individuals in Macau during this period was 8,600, with a significant portion having prior experience in the gaming and gaming junket sector, the hotel and restaurant industry, or the retail industry.
In 4Q23, Macau had a total of 371,100 employed individuals, out of which 286,100 were local residents. Among these, 67,400 were employed in gaming and gaming junket activities, indicating a decline of 3,600 individuals or approximately 5% from the third quarter.
Looking at the entire fiscal year 2023, Macau reported an annual unemployment rate of 2.7% for the total employed population and 3.4% for local residents.
These figures represent year-on-year decreases of 1.0% and 1.4%, respectively. The median monthly employment earnings for the total employed population were MOP$17,500 (US$3,307), while local employed residents earned MOP$20,000 (US$3,780). These amounts signify year-on-year increases of MOP$2,500 (US$311) and MOP$1,000 (US$124), respectively.
