Zona de Azar USA – Elon Musk Compares Artificial Intelligence to Poker: “Take a Bold Gamble”
USA.- January 31th 2024 www.zonadeazar.com In line with his usual grand statements, Elon Musk likened the artificial intelligence business to poker. In a series of tweets, the tycoon asserted that companies need to invest “billions of dollars” to stay competitive in this sector, which saw a new surge beginning in 2023. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been the emblem of a boom where many other “players” emerge, following the entrepreneur’s analogy.
Born in South Africa, Musk owns numerous companies spanning various sectors, with the most renowned being the automotive Tesla, aerospace firm SpaceX, neuroscience-focused Neuralink, and the social network X (formerly Twitter). Additionally, he recently founded xAI, a company dedicated entirely to artificial intelligence.
However, being an “AI company” is not necessary to reap the benefits of these technologies and invest in them. Musk highlighted this in one of his tweets, comparing the AI business to a high-stakes poker table with powerful players. In the message, he mentioned that in 2024, Tesla will spend over $500 million solely on AI chips developed by Nvidia to equip its vehicles.
“At the moment, what’s at stake to be competitive in AI is, at least, several billion dollars a year,” Musk commented, previously describing Tesla as an “AI and robotics company” rather than an automaker. In reality, the company is working on its humanoid robot, Optimus. Additionally, the billionaire hinted at plans to develop a supercomputer.
Nvidia, a player quietly amassing millions in the AI business
When thinking about the AI business, names like OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon come to mind. Yet, behind the scenes, there are other companies reaping significant profits in this technological boom. One such firm is the processor manufacturer Nvidia.
As noted by Business Insider, the world’s most powerful tech companies are competing to get their hands on as many units of Nvidia’s processors (the H100 model) as possible. Each GPU is estimated to cost between $25,000 and $30,000. What are they used for? They are essential for developing and training large language models that power chatbots, such as ChatGPT.
Recently, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, told The Verge that they are investing in a massive reserve of GPUs, aiming to accumulate a total of 600,000 chips by the end of the year. Musk, on the other hand, also purchases from another recognized hardware manufacturer, AMD.
