Concerns Raised Over Lower Minimum Bid For Pucón Casino Tender

🇬🇧 Latin America – March 06, 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com The new bidding process to operate the Pucón casino in Chile’s Araucanía region has sparked concern among local authorities after it was revealed that the minimum economic offer established for the tender could be 65% lower than the revenues currently received by the municipality from the casino operation.

Overview

Chile’s Superintendence of Gaming Casinos (SCJ) has opened the bidding process to grant a new operating licence for the casino located in the city of Pucón.

According to the technical bases of the tender, the minimum economic offer was set at 43,000 UF (Unidad de Fomento), which is approximately CLP 1.7 billion at current exchange values.

However, local officials and regional media have pointed out that this amount is significantly lower than the payments currently received by the municipality from the casino’s operation.

Local authorities express concern

The local newspaper La Voz de Pucón reported that the municipality had proposed a minimum offer of 60,000 UF, equivalent to roughly CLP 2.39 billion, about CLP 680 million more than the minimum established by the regulator.

If the licence were awarded at the minimum level set by the SCJ, estimates suggest the municipality could receive around CLP 3.1 billion less annually compared with the revenues generated under the current operation.

This situation has raised concerns among local authorities, who highlight the importance of casino revenues as a key funding source for municipal development projects.

Tender process underway

The official tender documents were published on January 30, 2026, and interested companies will have until July 23 to review the bidding conditions.

Operators wishing to participate will have 120 working days to submit their technical and financial proposals.

The official bid presentation hearing is scheduled for July 24, 2026, at the headquarters of the SCJ in Santiago.

Background of the process

The new licensing process follows the withdrawal of the current operator Enjoy, which renounced its licence for the Pucón casino as part of a broader financial restructuring process.

The objective of the tender is to select a new operator capable of managing the casino and supporting the economic and tourism activity of Pucón, one of southern Chile’s most important tourist destinations.

Looking ahead

Despite the concerns regarding the minimum financial requirement, the final outcome of the tender will ultimately depend on the offers submitted by interested operators, which could significantly exceed the minimum bid set by the regulator.

If higher bids are presented, the new licensing process could maintain — or even increase — the economic contribution that the casino provides to the city.

The debate highlights the critical role casinos play in the tourism economy and municipal financing of many destinations across Latin America.
