Zona de Azar Chile – Chile: OnLine Operators Respond in a Statement

Chile.- May 17, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Online betting operators in Chile responded to the reopening of the judicial investigation stating that it is only to complete pending proceedings, and recalled that the Public Ministry had already decided “not to persevere” if.

In a statement, the operators explained that the reopening is a formal procedure necessary to close the pending proceedings, and reiterated that the decision not to continue with the criminal prosecution had already been made and communicated by the Public Ministry.

The Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago agreed to carry out new proceedings before completing the investigation, as requested by the complainants.

However, the operators stressed that only the Public Ministry sets the criteria for criminal prosecution and their decision not to persevere does not require judicial authorization.

The spokesperson for the operators, Carlos Baeza (Photo), indicated that after six months, the case will be filed, whether or not the pending proceedings are completed.

They added that the Public Ministry has publicly stated that online betting is not included in the criminal types of illegal gambling of the Chilean Penal Code.

The operators affirmed that the Public Ministry’s decision confirms the legality of online betting in Chile and highlighted the need for modern regulation to protect users and generate tax revenue. They concluded that numerous legal reports support their position that online gambling is not a crime in the country.
