Brazil: Balneário Camboriú to Launch Municipal Lottery

Brazil.- May 28 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The city government of Balneário Camboriú is preparing to launch its own public municipal lottery, with revenues—after deducting prize payouts—allocated to specific local funds.
The proceeds will be equally distributed across four key areas: public transportation, urban mobility, drug prevention, and support for people with disabilities and regional development. Each of the designated municipal funds will receive 25% of the net lottery revenue.
Once the lottery is established, the municipality plans to grant its operation to the private sector, allowing for the use of any lottery modality authorized under federal law, including the sale of advertising space.
Operational aspects such as betting modalities, ticket pricing, prize structures, and the lottery’s branding still require specific regulation. The Municipal Finance Department will oversee the lottery’s implementation.
This initiative aims to diversify the city’s revenue sources, following a recent ruling by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) that confirmed the authority of states and municipalities to create and operate their own public lotteries.
