Brazil: Caixa Collected Less from Federal Lottery Bets

Brazil – June 12, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com The financial report for the first quarter of 2025 revealed an interesting figure: Caixa collected less revenue from federal lottery bets.
According to the data, games generated BRL 5.5 billion for the bank, representing a 29% drop compared to Q4 2024. Additionally, this marked a 10.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2023.
However, online games and sports betting are not to blame. The state-owned bank denies that the decline is linked to increased betting activity on private platforms or sportsbooks.
One of the main reasons cited for the decrease is that, at the beginning of 2024, there were more Mega-Sena jackpots —Caixa’s flagship lottery— exceeding BRL 100 million, which typically attracts more players.
In contrast, at the beginning of 2025, only one jackpot surpassed that amount.
Caixa Econômica Federal President Carlos Vieira told journalists that the institution still plans to launch its own betting platform.
However, he emphasized that the bank will act cautiously in entering this market:
“Caixa is concerned about encouraging gambling and will prioritize responsible play,” he stated.
The total net prize money awarded to bettors in the first quarter reached BRL 2.1 billion, an 8.2% increase compared to Q1 2024.
During the first three months of the year, BRL 2.1 billion —or 38.6% of total revenue— was also allocated to Federal Government social programs, including social security, sports, culture, public safety, education, and health.
Caixa’s Betting Platform Coming in the First Half of the Year
Carlos Vieira had already mentioned in previous interviews the development of a proprietary Caixa betting platform.
“We are in the final stage of studies to launch it in the first half of the year. We believe that Caixa, which has been managing lotteries since 1966, could not be left out. Our long-standing role as lottery operator greatly contributes to the system in terms of responsible gambling,” he said.
According to early estimates, the project aims to reach around BRL 18 billion in revenue over two years. Vieira also believes the state-run company has strong potential to become one of the leading sports betting operators in Brazil.
