Brazil: Senate Calls Public Hearing to Discuss the Future of National Football

Brasil.- June 26, 2025 The Sports Committee (CEsp) of Brazil’s Federal Senate has officially approved a request to hold a public hearing with Samir Xaud, the newly elected president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The date will be scheduled based on Xaud’s availability and willingness to attend.
The request was made by Senator Leila Barros (PDT-DF), former volleyball national team player and current head of the CEsp. According to her, the main goal is to open a direct dialogue with the CBF to better understand the new administration’s goals through 2029, including Brazil’s intention to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.
Key topics to be discussed include:
-
Public policies for women’s and grassroots football.
-
Investment in stadium infrastructure and youth development.
-
Greater transparency in football governance.
-
Football’s social impact and role in inclusion.
📌 Institutional context:
The Senate’s invitation comes in the wake of a recent institutional crisis in the CBF, which led to the removal of former president Ednaldo Rodrigues on May 15. A court ruling found irregularities in the process that upheld his mandate, including alleged forgery of a signature from Colonel Nunes, a former official suffering from cognitive impairment due to illness.
Rodrigues later gave up appealing to the Supreme Federal Court, and Fernando Sarney took over temporarily, organizing new elections that led to Samir Xaud’s victory.
