Rio de Janeiro Sues Betting Sites for R$300 Million

Massive fine for unlicensed operations

Brazil.-  July 22, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The Rio de Janeiro Public Defender’s Office has filed a lawsuit against 43 sports betting platforms, demanding a R$300 million fine for alleged collective damages to consumers.

Lack of transparency and player protection

Authorities claim the platforms operate without proper authorization in Brazil, fail to provide clear terms of use or privacy policies, and lack player protection mechanisms such as self-exclusion and betting limits, violating gambling addiction prevention standards.

Potential platform block in Brazil

The lawsuit seeks to halt the platforms’ operations in the state until they comply with Brazilian laws and requests that Anatel and ISPs block access to these platforms until full regulation is in place.

If approved, the fine would fund collective damage repair initiatives.
