Brazil: 300K Self-Exclusions and a Proposal to Fund Health
Brasília, March 04, 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com Brazil’s Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, revealed that nearly 300,000 people have self-excluded from online betting platforms after identifying compulsive behavior patterns, highlighting what the government considers an emerging public health issue linked to online betting in the country. The figure was shared during a recent interview with national media.
Padilha explained that gambling addiction — the loss of control over betting impulses — is associated with serious consequences for mental health, family finances and social wellbeing, potentially leading to depression and other severe outcomes.
In this context, the minister advocated for the idea that a portion of the tax revenue generated by betting platforms (bets) should be allocated to funding public health services, particularly prevention, treatment and support programs for gambling-related problems. This proposition complements a range of measures Brazil is promoting to address gambling addiction, including telehealth services and integrated support schemes within the public health system (SUS).
The discussion occurs amid ongoing regulatory developments in Brazil’s online betting market and broader debate about the responsibility of operators and the state’s role in protecting vulnerable populations from the risks of compulsive betting.
