Argentine Coast Guard Promotes Training on Gambling Addiction Prevention

Mental health specialists led a workshop in Mar del Plata

Argentina.- August 8 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The Argentine Naval Prefecture organized a training session on compulsive gambling prevention at its facility in the city of Mar del Plata. The workshop was conducted by specialists from the institution’s Health Department, who provided essential information to staff on identifying and addressing gambling-related issues.

Warning signs, how to intervene, and where to seek help

The session covered basic concepts about addictions, key warning signs, and practical intervention guidelines. It also offered guidance on where to seek professional mental health support.

The training was led by Principal Officer Damián Caprissi, a psychiatrist, and Principal Officer Julián Camilatti, a licensed psychologist — both from the Prefecture’s Mental Health Service.

“Compulsive gambling is often accompanied by anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and guilt, which significantly increases suicide risk,” Caprissi said. He added that up to 20% of individuals with gambling addiction have attempted suicide, and that the risk of suicide is up to 15 times higher than in the general population.

Ongoing institutional commitment to mental health

This initiative is part of the ongoing work of the Committee for the Prevention of Gambling Addiction and Substance Abuse within the Prefecture’s Health Department, which promotes mental health actions throughout Argentina.
