August 20th Was Established as “National Online Betting Day”

A date was created to celebrate the strength, unity, and commitment of the online betting market in Brazil.
Brazil.- August 21, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com ABRAJOGO, ANJL (National Association of Games and Lotteries) and IJL (Brazilian Institute of Legal Gaming), with the support of major industry leaders, announced the creation of “National Online Betting Day”, to be celebrated annually on August 20th.
The chosen date was symbolic. On August 20, 2024, the deadline established by the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting for expressing interest in a fixed-odds sports betting operating license, 114 applications were submitted. This historic milestone undeniably demonstrated the strength of the sector and the commitment of national and international entrepreneurs to transparency, regulation, and the construction of a solid and responsible market in Brazil.
The goal of “National Online Betting Day” was to celebrate the industry’s unity, recognize the professionals and companies that drove it forward daily, and reinforce the role of online betting as an ecosystem capable of generating jobs, investments, tax revenue, and support for Brazilian sports.
“August 20th had already gone down in history for our market. It was the day we demonstrated, with numbers and concrete actions, that Brazil had a strong, serious online betting sector, ready to operate under regulatory rules. Creating this date was a gesture of pride and unity for the entire industry,” said Alessandro Valente, chairman of the ABRAJOGO board.
“I had been in the industry for many years, and it was extremely satisfying to see how much had been achieved in such a short time. The Brazilian market advanced with responsibility, governance, and professionalism, establishing itself as one of the most promising in the world. Even with the hypocrisy of some in the legislature regarding the legalization of land-based gambling, we understood that the positive benefits of legal gambling far outweighed the disadvantages proposed by any individual or group against it. Illegal gambling was clearly a more harmful pastime than legalized and regulated gambling.” – stated Magnho José, president of IJL.
“More than just a milestone on the calendar, National Online Betting Day was an expression of our responsibility to society and the state. It proved that we were organized, engaged, and committed to a sustainable future for the sector in Brazil,” added Plinio Jorge, president of ANJL.
With this initiative, the entities invited companies, professionals, and partners to embrace the date, transforming August 20th into an annual moment of celebration, mobilization, and recognition of the online betting market in the country.
At the time, the sector had more than 170 federally licensed brands operating, boosting the economy, generating billions in tax revenue, and creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in areas such as technology, marketing, customer service, and compliance. Beyond the economic impact, these companies were committed to promoting responsible gaming, adopting practices that ensured transparency, consumer protection, and sustainability throughout the entire production chain.
