Betting Industry Warns Football Sponsorships at Risk Due to Tax Hike
Brazil.– November 13, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com Brazil’s sports betting industry warns that raising the tax burden could jeopardize its financial support for national football, estimated at over BRL 1 billion in sponsorships this season.
The government proposal to increase the tax rate on betting operators’ gross revenue from 12% to between 18% and 24% has raised concerns among companies that fear a setback for the regulated market and a boost for illegal gambling, which already accounts for more than half of national betting activity.
- Currently, 18 of the 20 teams in Brazil’s Série A maintain sponsorship deals with betting brands, highlighting the sector’s key role in the sport’s financial ecosystem.
Industry representatives argue that a sharp tax increase could reduce marketing and sponsorship investments, potentially harming both the State’s tax collection and the competitiveness of regulated operators.
The bill still awaits technical input from the Finance Ministry, and the Federal Senate is expected to debate the proposal soon, seeking a balanced approach between revenue collection, market regulation, and sports development.
