Brazil Approves National Program for Gambling Addiction Treatment

Towards Responsible Gaming Regulation

Psychological and Psychiatric Support for Problem Gamblers

Brazil – August 7, 2025  www.zonadeazar.com  Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved a federal program to treat gambling addiction (ludopathy), reinforcing the importance of mental health in the gambling regulation debate. The program will operate within the Unified Health System (SUS).

Key program areas include:

  • Specialized clinical and psychiatric monitoring
  • Individual and family psychological care
  • Social support and family guidance
  • Educational actions in schools and communities

The project, reported by Laura Carneiro and authored by Ruy Carneiro, highlights a rise in SUS-supported treatments for gambling addiction—from 108 in 2018 to 1,200 in 2023.

Betting Ad Campaigns Face Stricter Rules

The initiative proposes new restrictions on gambling advertising, targeting influencers and football clubs.
In the Senate, advertising by influencers has been banned, and stadium ads restricted to official sponsors only.

Senator Carlos Portinho supported the initiative based on a bill by Styvenson Valentim, aiming to protect youth from excessive gambling promotion.

Football Clubs and Operators Warn of Losses

Around 50 football clubs warned that the restrictions could lead to annual losses of R$ 1.6 billion.
Operators are lobbying Congress to reassess the law, especially the sections on advertising.

New Betting Landscape in Brazil

The evolving legislation seeks to:

  • Support vulnerable groups
  • Set clear limits for operators
  • Promote responsible gambling

📣 Gambling is not your reality. If you’re struggling, seek psychological support and learn more about gambling addiction.
