Brazil: Betting Seen as Income Source, Not Just Fun

Study shows Brazilians turning to betting for financial gain

Brazil.- August 8, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com A recent anthropological study reveals that an increasing number of Brazilians see sports betting and online gambling as income-generating tools rather than mere entertainment.

Research reveals deeper motivations

Anthropologists Patrícia Araújo and Jullyane Cardoso from Kyvo conducted fieldwork for six months, interviewing 60 people and analyzing over 5,000 social media posts.

“We already knew betting wasn’t just fun. Many are doing it to make ends meet or as their sole income,” says Patrícia.

Gender and social class shape betting behavior

  • Men often bet socially, motivated by sports interest.

  • Women tend to bet alone, often for household needs like bills or gifts for children.

In wealthier classes, betting is viewed as a hobby. In lower-income groups, it becomes a financial necessity.

Four betting profiles in Brazil

  1. Fortune Believer: Hopes for life-changing luck.

  2. Reality Expert: Uses data and strategy to win.

  3. Survivor: Bets to pay bills.

  4. Thrill Seeker: Plays for adrenaline and fun.

Informal earning through referral links

Sharing betting links has become a source of income, with some earning R$200–R$300 a day.

“It’s not like loan sharks — these are emotional, trust-based relationships,” says Jullyane.

Children and teens exposed to betting

The gamified design and fast rewards of betting platforms attract young users. Experts call for strategies beyond simple prohibition.

“We need new ways to engage them without just saying ‘you can’t’,” concludes Patrícia.

Betting now part of daily life

Betting has become intertwined with both the financial and emotional lives of many Brazilians. Understanding this shift is crucial for crafting responsible gambling policies.
