Brazil: BRICS Reinforces Commitment to Integrity

Brazil – June 6, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com On Wednesday (4), during the Meeting of Sports Ministers at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília, BRICS member countries and their new members reaffirmed their commitment to integrity and the fight against corruption in sports, highlighting cooperation as an essential instrument for social development and unity among peoples.
The theme of integrity was proposed by Brazil and included in the initial draft of this year’s Memorandum of Understanding during the six technical meetings, also led by Brazil, with the teams from the bloc’s member countries. The agreement reinforces the commitment of the countries to integrity, fair play, and transparency in sports, recognizing the serious threats posed by match-fixing, doping, corruption, and violence.
“The document is a political commitment and a consensus-building effort around a common goal: to strengthen cooperation among our countries through sport. The approved text represents a concrete step forward in consolidating a sports agenda for BRICS based on values such as integrity, inclusion, ethics, and solidarity. We have been working to ensure the integrity of Brazilian sport and we propose to expand this agenda within the bloc,” said the Minister of Sport, André Fufuca.
The representative from China opened the statements by highlighting the country’s role in promoting the spirit of cooperation since the bloc’s expansion, which now represents almost half of the world’s population. “Sport is a universal force of humanity and an important promoter of bonds among peoples. We welcome the inclusion of integrity in the Memorandum of Understanding on sports and have always been clear in our stance against sports corruption. China is open to deepening technical cooperation and working together with BRICS countries,” he said.
South Africa called for equality, criticizing the exclusion of the African continent from major sporting events and requesting BRICS’ support to change this situation. Egypt emphasized its investments in sports infrastructure and its capacity to host major competitions.
Ethiopia defended sport as a tool for peace and reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and technical exchange. India highlighted advances in infrastructure and advocated for the creation of a BRICS working group on sports events, focusing on ethics and anti-doping.
Iran emphasized the need for a fair and collaborative sports ecosystem, while Russia proposed consolidating efforts to promote health and an active lifestyle while upholding the bloc’s commitments. The United Arab Emirates announced significant investments in sports, focusing on the inclusion of women and people with disabilities, in addition to promoting ethical practices.
The meeting concluded with thanks and applause to Brazil for its exemplary leadership during the bloc’s rotating presidency, which was praised by several representatives. — Communication Office – Ministry of Sport
