Brazil: FIFA Reinforces Ban on Betting Ads in VAR and Pressures CBF to Comply

Brazil, August 12, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com – FIFA has reiterated its ban on sports betting advertising on referee uniforms, VAR booths, and pitchside review areas, urging CBF to align with its rules.
Changes Affecting Brasileirão
In an August 1 statement, FIFA cited Article 15 of its refereeing regulations, which prohibits advertising related to betting, tobacco, alcohol, narcotics, and political, racist, or religious messages in these spaces.
Currently, Serie A and the Copa do Brasil are sponsored by Betano, whose branding appears on the VAR totem.
Mandatory Adjustment
FIFA requires that any graphic elements shown during a VAR review be free of prohibited advertising.
CBF has confirmed it will comply with the ruling, aimed at safeguarding the integrity and impartiality of football.
Brazilian Market Context
Today, 18 of the 20 Serie A clubs have betting companies as main shirt sponsors, making this a significant shift in brand exposure related to refereeing.
