Brazil: Izalci Criticizes Mauro Cid’s Plea Deal and Rejection of the Bets CPI Report

Brazil – June 17, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com Senator Izalci Lucas (PL-DF), in a speech this Monday (16), criticized the investigations related to the January 8 events and the plea bargain of former aide-de-camp to Jair Bolsonaro. According to the senator, messages published by a weekly magazine reveal contradictions in the accusations against the former president and his allies.

“Recently, the messages from Mauro Cid revealed by Veja magazine exposed what we’ve always said: the so-called ‘coup plot’ is a farce, a fabrication driven by lies aimed at persecuting political opponents. Mauro Cid, in his own words, said that Bolsonaro wasn’t going to do anything. This statement is revealing because it shows that the narrative around these investigations is not based on concrete evidence. When it is said that no proof is needed, only a narrative, and that the sentence is already written, it’s clear we’re dealing with manipulation that violates the right to defense and the truth,” he said.

Izalci called for the annulment of Mauro Cid’s plea deal and the release of those under investigation, such as General Braga Netto. The senator stated that the federal government could have prevented the attacks but chose not to act. He also mentioned the disappearance of security camera footage and demanded explanations.

“The National Force could have intervened, the Shield Plan could have been implemented, but in fact, as I proved in my CPI report—it’s documented—the federal government could have prevented all of this. And why didn’t they? Because there was interest in letting it happen. The footage disappeared,” he declared.

The senator also regretted the rejection of the final report of the CPI that investigated the online betting market in Brazil. The report by Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), which recommended indicting 16 people, including influencers Virgínia Fonseca and Deolane Bezerra, was defeated by four votes to three. According to Izalci, the involved parliamentarians lacked commitment.

“To avoid what happened now in the Bets CPI—where I didn’t miss a single day and prepared a report with over 3,000 pages—my vote wasn’t even counted because I was a substitute. Then the main member, who never attended a single meeting, comes and votes against the CPI’s report. So they lost 4 to 3, the first time in 10 years a CPI report has been rejected,” he concluded.
