Brazil: Izalci Lucas Defends Extension of the Bets CPI

Brazil – May 29, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com – Senator Izalci Lucas (PL-DF) defended this Tuesday (27), in a speech on the Senate floor, the extension of the work of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on Sports Betting, known as the Bets CPI. According to him, more time is needed to hear summoned individuals, such as digital influencer Luan Kovarik — known as Jon Vlogs — who, according to the senator, published a video with accusations involving the President of the Republic. Luan is reportedly outside the country and did not attend the hearing scheduled for this Tuesday.

The CPI has already been extended by 45 days and is scheduled to conclude on June 14. The senator argues that the delay is necessary to complete the report “responsibly.”

“I hope common sense prevails here and that we can approve the request to postpone this CPI, because we still need to hear some people in order to finalize the report. If the real goal is to investigate and improve legislation, then we’ll need a bit more time,” said Izalci.

The senator also criticized the government’s increase of the Financial Operations Tax (IOF) rate and announced that he submitted a request to the Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE) to summon Finance Minister Fernando Haddad. Izalci claims that the adjustment violates the principle of annuality established by the Constitution. He mentioned that the Liberal Party has already submitted a Legislative Decree Bill (PDL) to revoke the measure’s effects and that there is also a legal action on the matter.
