NBA Holds Lottery to Determine 2025 Draft Order

USA – May 13, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com – The National Basketball Association (NBA) will hold the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, the key event that determines the selection order for the first four picks of the NBA Draft. According to league rules, the 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs will participate in the draw to establish the draft order for selecting new players.

The lottery determines the order of the top four picks among the non-playoff teams. From the fifth pick onward, the draft order follows the inverse standings of the regular season, based on each team’s performance.

A total of 1,000 four-number combinations are distributed among the 14 teams. The three worst-performing teams each receive 140 combinations (14%), the fourth receives 125 (12.5%), and so on, down to the 14th team, which gets 7 combinations (0.7%).

The lottery itself involves randomly drawing four numbered balls (1 to 14) to generate a combination that determines the order of selection. This year, the Utah Jazz, having finished with the worst record, will have the maximum 140 combinations.

The NBA Draft Lottery is designed to prevent teams from deliberately losing games (known as “tanking”) in order to secure the top overall pick.

What is the NBA Draft?

The NBA Draft is an annual event in which the league’s 30 teams select new players to join their rosters. The draft order is determined by the lottery for non-playoff teams and by reverse standings for the rest. Teams are also allowed to trade draft picks in exchange for players or future selections.
