Oklahoma QB Denies College Football Betting Allegations

USA – August 14, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com – Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has denied allegations of impermissible sports wagering after screenshots of his personal Venmo account, containing descriptions referencing “sports gambling,” were posted online.

Payments under scrutiny

The records show two payments to his then-Washington State teammate Richard Roaten in November 2022, one referencing a game between USC and UCLA.

The NCAA prohibits players, coaches, and staff from betting on competitions it sponsors, and student-athletes who wager on their own team or sport at their institution may face a permanent loss of eligibility.

“They were inside jokes”

Mateer responded in a statement:

“The allegations that I participated in sports gambling are false. The Venmo descriptions were inside jokes with friends. I have never bet on sports.”

The University of Oklahoma said it is unaware of any NCAA investigation and highlighted its gambling education programs and collaboration with ProhiBet.

NCAA gambling cases and ongoing debates

The case comes as college football faces other gambling-related controversies:

  • In 2023, Iowa and Iowa State athletes were investigated, with sanctions issued against several former players.

  • In 2024, a Texas player was ruled ineligible for wagering on PrizePicks but was later reinstated after repaying winnings.

The NCAA is currently considering allowing student-athletes, coaches, and staff to wager on professional sports, with a vote expected in October.
